What Is DUST on Midnight? A Simple Guide
DUST is what pays for private transactions on Midnight. You do not buy it, you generate it. Here is what that means in plain English.

What is DUST on Midnight? DUST is the resource that pays for private transactions, and you do not buy it on an exchange. You generate it by holding NIGHT, or cNIGHT on Cardano, and registering that holding. It then refills over time, like a battery, for as long as you keep holding. This guide explains the whole idea in plain English, with no cryptography background needed. As of August 2026, GeroWallet and DUST generation happens inside the wallet.

TL;DR

DUST is the resource that pays for private transactions on Midnight. You do not buy it. You hold NIGHT on Midnight or cNIGHT on Cardano, register that holding once, and DUST refills over time like a battery, up to a cap. Registration needs a small pure-ADA output as collateral, which is where most people get stuck. GeroWallet 2.7, released on 19 August 2026, does the registration inside the wallet and can sponsor that collateral for you.

What is DUST on Midnight, in one sentence

Hold NIGHT, register it once, and DUST accumulates for you to spend on private transactions.

If you take nothing else from this article, take that. Everything below is detail.

Why a private chain needs its own fuel

On most blockchains you pay a fee in the same coin everyone trades. You spend ADA to move ADA. The fee is a price, it moves with the market, and if the coin gets expensive so does using the chain.

Midnight does something different, and the reason is worth understanding.

Private transactions are expensive to compute. If the fee for them were a tradeable coin, then the cost of privacy would rise and fall with speculation, and during a bull run privacy would become a luxury. That is a bad outcome for something meant to be a basic property of the network.

So Midnight separates the two jobs:

NIGHT is the asset you hold. It is a token, it has a market price, and it represents your stake in the network.

DUST is the resource you spend. It is generated by holding NIGHT. It is not traded, so its availability does not depend on what the market is doing that week.

The practical effect: if you hold NIGHT, you get a continuous allowance of private transactions. You are not repeatedly buying the right to use the chain.

The battery analogy

The most useful way to picture DUST is a rechargeable battery attached to your holding.

It charges on its own. Once your holding is registered, DUST accumulates over time without you doing anything.

It has a maximum. The battery fills to a capacity and stops. It does not grow forever, so a very old registration is not sitting on an infinite reserve.

Spending drains it. Each private transaction uses some DUST, and the battery refills afterwards.

A bigger holding means a bigger battery. More NIGHT means more capacity and a faster refill.

This is why GeroWallet shows DUST as a battery rather than as a balance line. A balance implies something you top up by buying more. A battery implies something that refills on its own, which is what actually happens.

NIGHT and cNIGHT, briefly

There are two places your holding can live, and both work.

NIGHT is the native token on Midnight itself.

cNIGHT is NIGHT represented on Cardano, sitting in a Cardano wallet next to your ADA.

Both can generate DUST. That second one matters more than it sounds: if you are already a Cardano user, you do not have to bridge anything to a new chain before you start. Your existing wallet, holding cNIGHT, can generate DUST directly.

There is a fuller explanation in our guide to NIGHT, cNIGHT and DUST.

What registration actually is

DUST generation is not automatic just because you hold the token. There is one setup step, called registration.

Registration is an on-chain action that says two things: this holding should generate DUST, and the DUST it produces should go here. That second part is a destination, and it is why registration can be updated later if you want the DUST to land somewhere else.

Three things worth knowing before you do it:

It is a one-time setup, not a subscription. Once registered, generation continues without further action.

It can be undone. Deregistration exists, and so does changing the destination.

It has one common snag. Registration needs a small amount of pure ADA available in your wallet as collateral. Plenty of wallets are full of native tokens without a clean ADA-only output sitting spare, and that is where people get stuck.

Why GeroWallet makes this the easy path

This is the part where the difference between wallets actually shows up. Generating DUST today typically means leaving your wallet for a separate portal, working out the registration yourself, and hitting the collateral problem with no obvious fix.

GeroWallet removes those steps as of version 2.7, released on 19 August 2026. Features roll out in stages rather than all at once, so a given option may not be switched on for your wallet the moment you update.

No separate portal. Registration and DUST generation happen inside the wallet you already use, not on a different site you have to find and trust.

No bridging required. You can generate from cNIGHT held on your Cardano wallet. Your assets stay where they are.

The collateral problem is handled for you. If your wallet has no pure-ADA output to use as collateral, Gero lends one from a shared pool so registration completes anyway. This is the single most common dead end in the whole process, and it simply stops being your problem.

Duplicate registrations get caught. It is easy to end up registered twice against the same holding, which quietly splits your generation so the battery fills more slowly than it should. The wallet spots duplicates and walks you through merging them.

One honest battery. The DUST display covers both native NIGHT and cNIGHT-backed generation, so you see your real total rather than half of it.

Put together, the work drops from "find a portal, learn a flow, solve a collateral puzzle" to registering once from a screen you were already looking at.

What DUST actually pays for

It helps to know what you are spending it on, because the answer is narrower than "everything you do".

Private transactions consume DUST. Sending shielded value on Midnight is the main use. The transaction has to be proved before the network accepts it, and DUST is what covers that.

Ordinary holding costs nothing. Simply having NIGHT or cNIGHT in your wallet does not drain anything. A wallet you never transact from sits at a full battery indefinitely.

Reading is free. Checking a balance or viewing history does not consume DUST. Only actions that change state on chain do.

So the pattern for a normal person is that the battery mostly sits near full and dips when you actually move value. If you transact rarely, you will likely never think about DUST again after registering. If you transact constantly, the size of your holding starts to matter, because that is what sets your refill rate.

A simple worked example

Imagine you hold some cNIGHT in your Cardano wallet and you register it.

NIGHT token generating DUST in GeroWallet

Day one. You register. The battery starts at zero and begins charging. The wallet shows a charge percentage, a generation rate, and an estimated time to full.

Day three. The battery has charged. You send a private transaction. The charge dips by whatever that transaction cost.

Day four. It has already started refilling. You did nothing.

A month later. You have transacted a handful of times and the battery has never run dry, because your refill rate comfortably exceeds your usage.

That is the whole lifecycle. One setup step, then a resource that quietly maintains itself. The failure case is not complicated either: if you transacted far more often than your holding supports, the battery would run low and you would wait for it to recharge, or hold more NIGHT to raise the ceiling.

Common misunderstandings

"Where do I buy DUST?" You do not. There is no DUST market. If someone offers to sell you DUST, that is a scam.

"Do I need to lock or stake my NIGHT?" No. Registration marks a holding for generation. It is not a lock-up.

"Will I run out?" Only if you transact faster than your battery refills. Holding more NIGHT raises both the capacity and the refill rate.

"Does registering make my holdings public?" Registration is an on-chain action, so the registration itself is visible. That is separate from your transactions, whose contents stay private.

"Is DUST the same as gas?" It plays the role gas plays, but it is generated rather than purchased, which is the whole point.

Frequently asked questions

What is DUST on Midnight?

DUST is the resource that pays for private transactions on Midnight. It is generated by holding and registering NIGHT, or cNIGHT on Cardano, and it refills over time rather than being bought.

How do I get DUST?

Hold NIGHT or cNIGHT, then register that holding so it starts generating. There is nothing to purchase. In GeroWallet, registration and generation are moving inside the wallet in the coming 2.7 release.

Can I buy DUST on an exchange?

No. DUST is not a traded asset and there is no market for it. Treat any offer to sell you DUST as a scam.

Do I need to move my ADA or bridge anything?

No. cNIGHT sits on Cardano alongside your ADA and can generate DUST from there, so Cardano users can start without bridging.

What if my wallet has no ADA collateral for registration?

That is the most common blocker. GeroWallet's coming release lends a collateral output from a shared pool so registration completes anyway.

How long does DUST take to build up?

It accumulates continuously against your registered holding, and a larger holding fills faster and holds more. The wallet shows the current charge, the generation rate, and time to full.

Start with a wallet that already speaks Midnight

The simplest way to be ready is to already be running a wallet that handles Midnight, so registration is a single step rather than a project. GeroWallet is a non-custodial browser extension covering Cardano, Apex Fusion and Midnight from one interface, with Ledger, Trezor and Keystone support.

Install GeroWallet, or read more on the Midnight wallet page.
